Camp and Folly Intersection Improvement Project

Traffic Alert: Temporary Nighttime Detour for the Folly Road at Camp Road Intersection Improvements Project

Charleston County Government announces a temporary nighttime detour starting Monday, Sept. 19 for traffic on Camp Road from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. A segment of Camp Road will be closed to traffic from approximately 400 feet east of Folly Road to Bradford Street.  Crews will be installing drainage pipes across a 200 foot section of Camp Road in front of the AT&T building for the Folly Road at Camp Road Intersection Improvements Project. All work is weather permitting. 

 

Sept. 19 – Sept. 21

 

  • Nighttime detour on Camp Road is scheduled for Sunday through Tuesday between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

  • Westbound traffic on Camp Road will be directed onto Bradford and Prescott Streets to access Folly Road.

  • Northbound traffic on Folly Road will be directed onto Prescott and Bradford Streets to proceed east on Camp Road.

  • Flagmen will be on site to control traffic.  

  • Drivers will have access to businesses and residential properties along Camp Road at all times.
  • Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working in the area at all times.

 

The Folly Road at Camp Road Intersection Improvements Project on James Island involves improvements to Folly Road from about 1,000 feet south of Camp Road to the intersection with Eugene Gibbs Street and Rivers Point Row, and improvements to Camp Road from West Madison Avenue to Oyster Point Row. Improvements will relieve traffic congestion and localized flooding by adding turn lanes and upsizing drainage pipes. Bike lanes and sidewalks will also be included in the project. Traffic Alert: Detour Route and Nighttime Lane Closures continue for the Harbor View Road Improvements Project
 

Charleston County Government announces crews will close Mikell Drive and detour traffic on Sunday and Monday evening to install storm drain systems. Crews will also conduct nighttime lane closure on Harbor View Road for the Harbor View Road Improvements project.  All work is weather permitting.

 

Drivers will have access to all businesses and residential properties along Mikell Drive and Harbor View Road at all times.

 

September 18 - September 19:

 

  • Mikell Drive at its intersection with Harbor View Road will be closed on Sunday and Monday evening.

  • The detour and road closure will only occur between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Sunday and between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Monday.

  • Flagmen will be on site to control traffic.  
  • Message boards and detour signs will be on site to direct traffic.

 

September 18 – September 22:

 

  • Nighttime lane closures will occur on Harbor View Road between Affirmation Blvd. and Mikell Drive.

  • The work will occur between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

  • At no time will the entire roadway be blocked to traffic.
  • At least one lane will remain open to traffic under flagging operations.

  • Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working in the area at all times.

 

The purpose of the Harbor View Road Improvements project is to improve traffic flow and safety on Harbor View Road and to provide adequate bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The scheduled completion of the project is expected in December 2016.

 

The project will include the addition of a center two-way left turn lane between North Shore Drive and Affirmation Boulevard, the addition of right turn lanes at major intersections, the addition of traffic signals at Fort Sumter Drive and Mikell Drive, the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Harbor View Road and Fort Johnson Road and the addition of pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

Tropical Depression Julia -- Update 

Julia has weakened to a tropical depression and is located 65 miles south-southeast of Charleston and moving east at 2 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 35 mph with higher gust. Julia is expected to meander off the lower SC coast for the next few days with no significant change in strength.

Tropical Storm Warning and Flash Flood Watch has been cancelled but there is a coastal flood advisory in effect 6-9 am for Charleston County. The next high tide is at 7:43 pm.

The Town will continue to monitor but this will be the last update on Tropical Depression Julia.

Tropical Storm Julia and Sandbags 

Tropical Storm Julia is located about 40 miles south of Savannah, GA moving north at 6 mph.

There is a tropical storm warning in effect for all coastal waters, except Charleston Harbor. Flash flood watch is in effect for most of southeast South Carolina through the evening.

Winds- 15-25 mph with gust up to 35 mph along coast this afternoon and into the evening....
Rain-moderate risk of excessive heavy rain ,especially along coastal counties through Thursday night.
Rip Current-moderate risk along South Carolina beaches today.
Coastal flooding-there remains a risk of coastal flooding and beach erosion around times of high tides.
Timing of high tides- 9/14: approximately 7 pm
9/15: approximately 7:06 am; 7:30 pm
9/16: approximately 8 am; 8:30 pm

The Town has made sandbags available here at Town Hall. The bags are empty and there is a limit to 10 per household. The fill dirt is available at Pinckney Park, located at 461 Fort Johnson Road. The bags must be filled on your own, and please bring your own shovel. The bags and fill dirt are also available for purchase at the Lowes on James Island. The Town will continue to monitor the situation and provide any updates on changes.
