Town Operating at OPCON 4

The Town is operating at OPCON 4 and monitoring the threat of severe flooding on James Island. It appears that Hurricane Joaquin will go out to sea, however, the major threat to the area is significant flooding and heavy rains throughout the weekend.  We will continue to monitor Hurricane Joaquin for any potential impacts along the Charleston County coast.

This is a good time to update your contact information with the Charleston County Citizen Alert Notification System at https://member.everbridge.net/index/453003085611698  and on smart911.com.  For updates, visit the Town’s website at www.jamesislandsc.us , FaceBook and Twitter.

FLOOD ADVISORY

TOJI Public Works

October 1, 2015

James Island will be experiencing unusual flooding in low-lying areas and in all drainage basins due to astronomical high tides, rainy conditions due to a frontal boundary and the approach of Hurricane Joaquin. We can expect 4 to 10 inches of additional rain over the next 5-7 days. This will result in drainage ditches remaining full of water and some roadway flooding with long-term standing water. We expect this condition to remain until at least late next week. The rain has to stop, tides recede and hurricane pass for the water to go down and drainage to return to normal.

Please exercise caution when driving through flooded areas. Do not attempt to clean pipe culverts or other drainage structures! Be prepared for rising water and water near your house, foundation and out buildings. Be aware of wild animals, snakes and insects as the waters rise. Do not let children play in floodwaters or ditches!

If you see an obvious drainage system blockage, such as limbs and debris in front of a drain or culvert, please call 843-795-4141 to report it, or fill out a work request on the Public Works page of the Town website. Please realize that until the rain stops and ground has a chance to dry out, there will be standing water and slow drainage in all stormwater systems.

Thank you for your cooperation during this period and remember to exercise caution around flood waters. Stay alert for flash flood notices and do not drive through moving waters.
