The Town of James Island passed an ordinance in January of 2019 regulating the distribution of single-use plastics within the Town's jurisdiction. The Ordinance has been subsequently amended, with final ratification expected in Nov. of 2019. Please see below for copies of both ordinances.
Ordinance 2018-16 ORDINANCE PERTAINING TO ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE PACKAGING AND PRODUCTS
Ordinance 2019-09 AMEND ORDINANCE PERTAINING TO ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE PACKAGING AND PRODUCTS
The new regulations become effective on January 1, 2020.
The Town passed its ordinance identical to the ordinance passed by the City of Charleston. Many of our businesses have other locations in the City's jurisdiction, and we wanted to make the transition away from single-use plastics as smooth as possible.
The City of Charleston received a grant from DHEC to help support businesses with this change. There is a great deal of useful information on their website at https://www.charleston-sc.gov/1911/Environmentally-Acceptable-PackagingProd
Please contact Town Hall if you have any questions.
