The Town of James Island monitors several stormwater ponds that are not privately owned. Public Works personnel test the water to see if there are any pollutants and that it is healthy for fish and other wildlife. Sometimes residents near stormwater ponds will fertilize their lawns, or not pick up after their pets, and this leads to contamination. Fertilizer can cause algae blooms, which depletes the oxygen in the water resulting in fish kills. By working together with residents and landscaping companies, the Town promotes healthy stormwater ponds with enough clean water to protect nature.
